i recently added 2 large pieces of driftwood to my new 150 gallon aquarium. it has developed a whitish scum all over the pieces which i have washed off and cleared out as much of the stuff from the tank as possible. the pieces are now back in the tank.

what is the scum?
is the scum hazardous to fish or a wet dry?

Not hazardous, just ugly. Give it a few weeks and the stuff stops growing so much. Normal. Remember that wood is food, so if a microbe can grow on it , it will. But once it's exhausted the readily available/digestible portion, the scum will barely be noticeable and eventually seem to go away.

It's usually bacterial but can be fungal, too.

no pics, it is all scrubbed off and just a couple of pieces floating in tank. really happy to hear it will go away though.
