While down in S. Florida this past weekend, stopped at a LFS and saw they had some nice Electric Blue Dempseys about 2.5 inches long at half the price they are locally. So I picked out the largest one and have it in a 10 gallon quarantine tank. It's eating like a pig and seems to be very healthy. I want to put it into a mixed Central and South American 125 gallon tank. The fish that are in the tank: 1 albino Pacu about 7", 12 silver dollars, 1 Firehead Cichlid 5" and some Bristle Nosed Ancistrus. Also to go in are 3 Orange Shoulder Severums about 2-3", 2 Blue Acara 3", 2 Chocolates 3", and one banded Leporinus.

There is a lot of bog wood and one large rock "cave" so as well as two large sponge filters fish can get behind, so there are hiding places. The EB would be the smallest cichlid in the tank. Does anyone see problems with aggression? I don't want to see it beaten up and plan to add all the remaining fish at the same time in case the Firehead gets territorial.

I dont know much about fireheads but to me its pretty heavily stocked. On the good side seems like if you hot the largest one you may have gotten a male. To me the issue is the amount of fish not agression.

Yeah, it's a lot of fish, and I may have to move on some of the Silver Dollars, and possible the Pacu as the cichlids reach adult size. But I was planning on a bigger tank at some point so they may all go into that.

I posted this response to another member about his EBJD; " grow them either by themselves or non-aggressive cichlids since the EBJD is far less aggressive than their normal strain counterpart. The stress of tank aggression can kill them. When i raise them, I keep them together until one becomes dominant, and I remove that one out of the tank. believe it or not, I have 3 EBJDs living with my discus... that's how passive these guys can be."

Nice! I have a tank with only Geophagus, Diamond Tetras, and a Flagtail Prochilodus so the Dempsey could go in there, there is only a little aggression between the Geos. If he turns out to be nasty, he can always go in the other tank with the bad boys.

Don't see a problem, er.... except maybe the banded lep. Mine was an absolute sh&%head. Swore I would never own one again. It would just go around all day and pull scales off all the cichlids.

Never had a big problem with them, at one time I had one nearly a foot long in with a big arowana, some severums and other fish and it mostly hid all the time. The one I have is in quarantine with some cichlids and it was chasing the severums around until I added more fish, now everyone seems to be okay for now.

Finally decided to put the EBJD in the tank with the Geophagus and he's doing great. Moved the Flagtail Prochilodus to another tank, he was always picking on the Geos, and even though he did not harm them, he was making their lives miserable. The Dempsey has not shown any aggression and is eating like a pig, hopefully he'll keep that disposition as he gets bigger.
