I felt like this lil 1" gem was worth trying to grow out. My question is what is the best options to power feed this lil bugger. It's in a peaceful planted cube now. Then moving to a 20g then to my 110 with a Dempsey and multispinosa and some other kids.

I have a few of those and bought them from a good breeder. He feeds his beefheart flakes and frozen brine shrimp. Some people are against beefheart flakes but the one he uses is listed as very thin and designed for juviniles. He says the key is the high protein. I think NLS woud be also good perhaps better. I got my beefheart flakes from the same place he gets his. http://angelsplus.com/FlakeBeefheart.htm I think adding garlic to his diet would also be a good idea. The regular NLS has garlic in it. I've had mine for almost 4 weeks and are growing. I'll post more pics in a couple days on my blog.

Oh very nice looking blue.

Beef heart is junk for ca/sa cichlids(and most fish), especially ebjd who are prone to bloat. Fish just aren't designed for cow heart..wonder why. I feed mine NLS, if I were you I'd feed a quality pellet as a staple, coupled with healthy frozen/live. Here's mine... ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1359446072.842961.jpg

Problem with EBJDs is not bloat, it's parasites and other diseases. Put him in a tank that has UV filtration with little to no competition and you'll dramatically increase your chances of raising that little guy to adulthood.

Gorgeous fish! Definitely going to be a beauty.

Normally I would advice against beef heart. Many cattle are given growth hormone so they reach slaughter size faster and that growth hormone can sometimes reflect in the beef heart that is given to fish. While the growth hormone will not kill your fish, it can often have behavioral side effects such as increased aggression. However, since the company selling the product in Steve's link is a fish organization, I should think they have taken this in account because they would have to write it on the label if it contained any.

That being said, I take Probass's stance. While I can't get the same growth results from anything else out there, it just feels unnatural. Fish will grow at a rate that is determined by the availability and quality of food. If you want to grow them fast, try doing 3-5 feedings a day of high quality foods. Starting your own brine shrimp hatchery, growing them to adulthood, then gut load them 10-20 minutes before feeding them to your fish. If you go the frozen food route, there are many options available, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, spirulina, and combinations of the three. You can also feed a high quality pellet or flake food. For my SA cichlids, I use a variety and feed twice daily. In the mornings, I feed cichlid flakes. Dinner is pellets except twice a week when dinner is frozen blood worms.

False, bloat is a problem with EbJDs as well as parasites (hex).
Ebjds can develop Swim Bladder Disorder due to being bloated.
This can happen by being fed blood worms and/or beefheart as their digestive systems are sensitive, or simply just being overfed something that is too dense.
Thats is why many breeders recommend feeding them low protein foods that are also easily digestible such as flakes or HBH spirulina for a majority of their early age.
They also do not NEED UV filtration. I have seen monster blues from Rick's collection being raised w/o a heater in a tank w/ competition at their size and all are healthy 10" beasts.

OP, the last thing you should be worried about is "power feeding" your little blue. Feed him flakes at that size (preferably NLS w/garlic) until he is at size ready for pellets. Keep him in a stress-free environment until he is big enough to be in a community and he will be a stunner. They are NoT quick growers but are very rewarding fish once they do :) goodluck
