Ok I finally figured out a consistent way to prime the Eheim Classic 2217 after messing with it for a few hours. I now have some weird issues though and would like the thoughts of the experts.

1. The filter seems to be working fine but every 2-4 minutes there is a extra strong flow for a few seconds then back to normal then 2-4 minutes later a few seconds of the strong flow again. Is this normal? What is causing it? is that bad for the filter? Anything I should do?

2. Not a issue I do not think but with the spray bar on the flow is so had it fills my tank with air bubbles because it is so strong. I removed the spray bar and just have the tube running directly into the top of the tank.

3. When I need to prime the tank I need to remove all the water before priming. Is this normal?

Thanks for your quick help on this filter.

It is possible there is still air trapped in your filter which is causing the 'surging' effect you are seeing.

Did you follow the installation instructions for where to place the filter?

Do you have any loops or sags in the hoses?

Q. #2 You can always place the spraybar under the water surface so that it still ripples the surface but doesn't cause any bubbles to appear on the water surface.

Q.#3 I prefer to remove all the water from the canister filter when performing maintenance as the filter will prime better if no water is present.

4D3: I read for hours this site and others before I posted these questions and 100% my problem was not covered. It was solved by a personal friend today who realized the bubbles from a air stone were going into the intake of the new filer causing air in the filter even when it was cleared out and after that air stone was moved all problems stopped occurring. That issue is not covered anywhere on this site and now in the future if someone has the same issue as me they will possibly find this thread and get new ideas on how to solve their issues SO this thread will now help future filter owners with the same issue and with no answers easily available online. Thanks for not helping but my issue is now solved.

why would you have an air stone near the canister inlet...

Bosstone, thanks for posting the solution to your problem. Sometimes it's the little things that we don't realize that contribute to filter problems.

4D3, it is very possible that the OP is a brand new aquarist and this is his/her first time setting up a tank or filter.

I have the 2217 with the same issue. I never bothered with it as this is in my ray grow out tank. And with me the air bubbler is on the other end of the intake. I wonder what mebbe causing this? Priming is done thoroughly and no bubbles are left.

i think you need to search and read dude...

all of these issues are covered here!

The search feature on this site kind of sucks
