so i just put in a emperor 400 power filter in my 55 gallon tank and also a penguin 200 in my 29 gallon tank tonight. in both tanks i have a established sponge filter. i kept my old power filters in the tank also so i did not loose any bacteria. how long should i keep the other power filters in the tank???? do i need to keep them in the tank since i have a established sponge filter in it. thanks for reading my thread and i hope u can help me out

The emp 400 and penguin 200 are new filters?

I usually go four to five weeks. You could try sooner but keep an eye on your ammonia levels after removing the old HOB.

Might not need to wait at all, if you have gravel alot of bacteria should be built up in your gravel. You also have an established sponge filter. If your tank isnt overstocked you probably dont have to wait. If you want to be extra careful then wait the 5 weeks and then you shouldnt have any worries.

i do have gravel in the tanks it has not been cleaned out for about a week and yes i do have a sponge filter in the tanks also i think i might wait a week and see. if my ammonia lvl goes up what should i do to lower it

if you take the media out of your old filters and put it in the new ones you could remove you old filters as soon as yer done....

Id wait at least two weeks. A little extra filtration never hurts. If your in a big hurry for whatever reason. Integrate the other power filters media in to your new ones or at least float the cartridges (after a tank water bath of course)
