new filter-new media

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My original post was to save you some servace time but if the 2217 is going to be your main filtration then go with the recomended set up and clean it out more often. If you do this then you can probubly leave out the sponge filter and the internal. I love Fluval canisters and have a LARGE number of them running on our tanks but I hate the internals with a passion...

We have a corner tank set up for our Angelfish and because of the design of the tank theres VERY little room for filtration of any kind so I have that canister running a LOT differantly that I do any of the others. It needs to be a more complete system.

thanks for the help all btw, i acturally understand what you say:ROFL:
so if i used that pack how long would it last and there is only 1 filter pad in it:screwy: is that all it can fit. or is the ehfimech and substratpro a type of ceramic ring?

For that "pack the only thing you'd have to eventually replace is the fine filtration pad(I don't even use one) because it becomes clogged and is not easily cleaned and also slow water flow. The Ehfimech are ceramic rings but are not designed to grow BB. The substraitpro is one of the best biomedias you can buy and are round in shape. Both these will last for years and the coarse pad can be rinsed many times over.

If water polishing is very important to you, don't incorperate into your existing filtration. Get a magnum 350 or HOT magnum 250 and use it strictly for water polishing.

thanks ok my plan was anyway to get the internal so awhile and as the fish grow get the a fluval external carnt remmeber the model but ile find it out, and then remove the internal to a smaller tank.
i havent had a fluval external but i have read good review and i like them because they are well priced and small-lxhxw wise because the 1 i have is huge:(
wolf do you know of any other fluvals simular spec to the ehien just to compare ect

bderick still havnt got a black arowana and have given up with getting one for now.i have rang shops and vendors and all say they carnt get them because they are not very popular but they have silvers:(
hes looking good your aro tho with the discus look great with the plants

Yes. You should look into a Fluval 405. It has far superior machanical filtration and is a LOT simpler to use. the ratings are similar and each of the 4 baskets are split allowing you to use as many as 8 differant types of media if you like. All I use are ceramic rings for bio filtration and of course the stock foam in a seperate holder. Its a reasonably priced unit thats also very quiet and relitivly problem free and easy to use. The 403 series gave the company a bad reputation but this is a FAR better filter with a completely new design.

ok so whats better the fluval 405 or the ehiem 2217?
whats the quietest? and best for ca/sa cichlids
the fluval is more expensive by about £20$40 so is it worth it?
