Some of you may have seen a post in the classifieds a few weeks back for SunSun canister filters. It was a set of filters for sale. I actually bought them.
The seller told me that he had no time to take care of his fish and just wanted to get rid of everything. After speaking with him, he told me his fish kept dying so he gave up.
Anyway, I picked up the filters and after inspecting them thoroughly, I think I found the reasons for his fish loss.
First off, the rubber seal on the canisters is in tact, but had a clear greasy substance around it. I think it is petroleum, like vaseline.
Secondly, the intake tube was sealed with some foam gasket stuff.
This guy worked at an auto repair shop so I'm guessing he used some products from there. Ya buddy, great idea.
So now I have these filters and am in the process of cleaning them.
What is the best way to get off this greasy stuff in a safe way?
Should I just ditch the intake tube and buy some others?
The interior of the canisters have a reddish tint. Any idea what this could be?
Thanks,
Rob
