new filter schme

dear all,
i wonder, if i design this kind of filter in my sump,
will it work nicely in my planted tank? or just an ordinary sump will suffice?
and what pro and cons do you guys have in your mind to this kind of design?
i really need an input about this one?

I'm not sure about the sand idea. Sand filtering needs to happen under pressure. A lot of times the flow is up through the sand so the flow works against the gravity of the sand. Your flow is under drain pressure (not much pressure) and is flowing with gravity causing the sand to compact like concrete. I would just fill that whole area with bio-balls or some other type of bio media. Simple is sometimes the best way.
