It sounds like a bioload issue.
What is your water parameters?
What is your water change routine?
How long has the aquarium been up and running?
Do you use a dechlorinator such as prime?

This is what happened I bought a small external filter for my 55 lt tank I took mature media from my fluval 406 filter and put this in new filter. In the tank were 2 betta fish inspite of the mature media being in the new filter there was still a mini cycle for about 5 days in which I did daily water changes and used prime so I was wondering why a mini cycle took place even though the new filter was filled with mature media.

I'm thinking the daily water changes caused the mini cycle.

I agree with tlindsey tlindsey maybe filter maintanance isn't where it should be some available ammonia got displaced by the removal of "seeded" material? Shouldn't cause a mini cycle by adding filtration to existing filtration unless it was already an on going issue. Also wc could cause it especially if chlorine is present in the wc source.
