i want to have a malawi tank setup. i want to put sand in the tank but i dont have any experience with it. i would like to know what type of filter i would need and what else. i have an undergravel filter right now. im looking for a filter that i dont have to buy something for it every two weeks. i used to have an emperor 400 and hated it. so any ideas.

you'll have to scrap your undergravel filter too

how big a wet and dry filter and am i going to have to buy stuff for it all the time or can i just clean it. i have no experience with that type of filter.

Yup, get a wet /dry. One of the best options available to you.

You can not use and undergravel with sand because the sand will pass thru the slots in the undergravel plate. Sand also compacts not allowing water to pass thru it very easily.

where did you get the idea that you have to buy stuff for it all the time??????

bioballs will last forever just clean them once a year and if you have good mechanical filtering you wont need to clean them at all

propably the only thing you will have to replace is any chemical media you may have in the wet-dry.

Get a model that holds about 3 to 4 cu gallons of bio balls. The pre filter sponge can be rinced out and re used for a few years. The filter pad at the drip tray will need replaced about every 4 weeks or so. It is cheap, couple bucks or so if you buy bulk filter pad. If you choose to use activated carbon, it'll run you a few bucks a month or so.
