I have an established 30 gallon I've been preparing for a pair of GBR's for some time. By established I mean I have had this tank running for almost 2 years. long story... but the short version is that the LFS has had a few "weak" batches of GBR's and I want to wait for some stronger fish to arrive. Anyway right now I have a Whisper 60 HOB. I was going to change to an Aquaclear as I have 2 AC110's on my 90 and love em. However this tank is in an unusual spot as I have it on top of the planter shelf at the bottom of my staircase, so a bulky HOB looks out of place. I placed a finished board over the planter, placed the tank on top and it fits perfectly. In this location both long sides and one end are visible so only one short tank wall is against the bearing wall (so the tank sits parallel to the stairway). you can view it on 3 sides, from 2 rooms, and it's awesome at night time when it lights up the base of the stairs.

What alternatives to the bulky, and visually unappealing HOB's would you recommend? I have 2 cabinets underneath so that should open up some possibilities as well. I'd like to keep the expense reasonable but provide the fish with top end filtration too of course.

Thanks to all!

It would appear you've made a decision, but.....

I recently got a Marineland Magnum 350 Pro, I love it, it's quiet, compact & filters excellent. I know Marineland has gotten a bad rap over the years with the "bio-wheel" stuff, but this unit really impressed me, plus the price was reasonable too. I got the "upgrade" model with bio-wheels, spraybars etc. but the basic canister portion is the same as the regular model.
