new fish obcessed with heater

I got a baby convict 2 days ago and put him or she in my 20 gallon tall. It is only about a inch including the tail and is in there by itself. I have noticed that it keeps going up to the heater for awhile and just hang out and kiss it every once in awhile. I am afraid that it is going to get to hot.
Is it just lonely if so what could I put with it other than another convict.
I plan on moving it to a 10 gallon once I get it setup again. Since it is so small would it be ok to put some rummy nose tetras or corys with it?
I will probably move it in a month or so.

could the fish be hiding? I've had fish hide by the heater until they got used to the tank. if he goes by it too much you can buy a heater cover, I think, to protect the fish.
a 10 gallon is too small for a convict. it could work when it's 1" but you'll need to move it soon. but yes rummy nosed tetras and cories will do fine in a 10 gallon, but since both like to be in groups of 5 or more I'd get just one or the other.

I do not plan on moving the corys or rummy noses into the 10 they will stay in the 20 because I plan on getting german blue rams for the 20. The convict will be moved into the 10 gallon by itself when it gets setup. But for the time being I thought it may like some friends since the 20 gallon is just so big for such a tiny fish.
I was kind of thinking that it may see itself in the heater so that maybe a sign of it being lonely.
It maybe trying to hide but it kisses and pecks at the heater also.

What temp is the tank at? Maybe the water is a little cold for cichlids.

The stick on thing says 80 so it should be ok as long as it is working right.

Those things are cheap and don't work. Get a digital one, and you can tests all of your tanks with one thing.
