I recently cleaned out my 55 gallon, left in 1 pleco and bought a new Saber Tooth Barracuda. (Scientific name is Hydrolycus scomberoides)

He's a really cool predatorial fish and i have a seperate 10 gallon tank which i keep his food in, for now guppies. The store told me to feed him about 2-3 a day.

He is about 1 inch in length and i have one portion of the tank where i put some heavy vegetation and he likes to hang out there, the other side has a large hollow tree stump where my pleco seems to be all the time and a small cocanut hut.

My issue is i dont think he can actually get the guppies, i have a feeling the tank is too big. I pushed over some guppies and he came close to catching a few but they would swim off and he would just go back to his hiding place as if he was waiting for them to swim by again.

Knowing guppies they usually hover on the surface in some secluded corner and arent exactly too active in the tank, it is day 2, i have put in from yesterday and today a total of 7 guppies. Today I found 5 guppies still alive, i managed to force one over to the guy and he actually ate it.

I know he ate 1 confirmed but the others i cant tell, knowing the guppies they can be hiding anywhere. My question is should i be concerned with this? perhaps put him in a smaller tank before he gets to 2 inches and can eat some larger bait?? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

On a quick note, this morning turning on the lights i saw him on the other side of the tank, hovering over the tree stump looking downard. SO he seems to move around at night.

I am aware he will need a larger tank later on, and am going to invest in some powerheads in about 2 months time when he gets a little bit bigger.

The 55 might be too big but then on the other hand your scomb did come from a huge river and thats where they hide and hunt.I would keep all of the guppies in the tank with the scomb up to about twenty, that way he will see more of them and pick them off at will and when it gets bigger you can go back to using the feeder tank, scombs grow very slowly so that tank will do fine for a while. You could even get one or two more as they group well. How much did you pay for the scomb at that size, just curious?

$16.99 he was on sale.

I had asked the people at the fish store about just putting in 20 of them which is roughly the weeks supply but they told me he could eat more and get sick or something. I just dont like how guppies hover at the surface, i wonder what will happen if i put in the remaining, if they will hover.

They will hang at the surface but they will still move around some and the scomb will go after them.I dont think that he will eat more than what he needs to be satisfied, they are not the greediest fish.

Will you get more or just keep the one?

For now only one, the main issue is funds. I'm beginning school and joining the army reserve to help pay for that, plus i gotta pay for a 2 year old alaskan malamute as well heheh.

I'm saving up money for a larger tank in the future as well. However if the store does get more in again I might just take it.

I think im just going to put in the remaining fish, i figure i can use my 10 gallon tank as a quarantine for another 20+ fish while the first batch of 20 is in the actual 55 being eaten up for the week and to fatten them up a bit. That way i didnt waste my money on it.

Thanks for your help so far i appreciate it, im always open for suggestion if you have any new info or ideas. Thanks again

Glad to help and good luck with everything.

Thats exactly what i would do as well. And just keep a close eye on him as they are quite fragile when small. And i have never even seen a 1''er before.

A place out this way started with a tank full of small scombs and some of them were that small but they have actually grown and are almost three inches now.God I wish they were Redtail Tats.

Hey is the placo in with the scomb???

I heard thats bad news, it could suck off the slime coat and kill it, worry about it when they are young, im 99 percent sure its payara that should not be housed with placos when young good luck.
