Just got a new little guy in. They said he was a south american cichlid at the store. Ill post pics up later, but i was just wondering if anyone knew what it could be just by description? It is about 2 inchs in length with white and black stripes. The top of his dorsal is an orangish yellow color. His body is the shape of a GT but i know for a fact he is not a GT. any help?

only thing that comes to mind off-hand is a female convict..which is central american not south but I wouldn't expect most lfs to know that..lol. try googling a pic of a female convict and see if that's what you have. if not your best bet is to get a pic of the fish and then we'll have a lot better shot of id'ing it for you.

incidentally, do the stripes run vertically or horizontally...if they run horizontally then it's definitely not a convict.

:)

You say it looks kinda like a GT but different, with black and white stripes and the top of the dorsal fin has an orangish/yellow color. I'm with Rabendr, it sounds like a juvenile Aequidens Pulcher (blue acara-common name) but post a pic so we'll know for sure.

Does it look anything like this?
