new fish

I was browsing my lfs a couple days ago, and I saw a tank labelled "SA Cichlids 3 for $10". So I looked in (and of course everything is actually CA): convicts, firemouth, dempsey, and whoa, SALVINI!? 1" salvini with a little red already in the belly - females! We never see them around here. I couldn't resist; I figure I'll grow them out and see what they look like.

So I browsed a little further and... EBJDs! 2" fish $20@ - nice! So I'm now the proud new owner of three female salvini and a pair of ebjd!

i had someone at petco tell me that firemouths are africans once and they should never be kept in a SA tank

Update: Man, salvini are some nasty fish! These gals are really little, but they managed to kill a tiger barb and ate its stomach area! What must a six inch one be capable of?!?

Definitely not!

I'd like to eventually have an ebjd with a sal if I can avoid open warfare, but with little ebjd I take no chances. They're hard enough to grow out without adding complications. Right now the sals are in a 10g and going to a 20g soon. The ebjds are in a 30g with some dithers and a couple small clown loach.

I wouldn't mix a juvie salvini with anything less than an adult blue, even then, could be a risk.
