If I get a 50 gallon aquarium (trying to negotiate for Christmas) Do we need to give the floor work? I could Put it in the basement, Most of my fav fish are nocturnal anyway, but could I? That's my mom's current clause about buying fishtanks. She also buy overpriced (250$ 10 gallon kit from PetSmart). But any help to win the war? Otherwise I may have to stick with a 7" feature cat, and that's no fun. I may even end my fish plans which means no more MFK.....

50 gallon tank is fine and doesnt need any floor reinforcement. And if you paid $250 for a 10 gallon kit, you got grossly ripped off. You can buy a 55 gallon kit for WAY less.

Very true on all this. You can ge a kit a petsmart for 179 for a 55 right now... maybe even cheaper with the holidays.

you just have to set up that 50 up on the floor so that it covers more than one floor joist so that the floor bears the weight on more than on floor joist say the joist are like this ---------- set the tank cross ways across them. 250 bucks for a 10 u got raped
----------

Ok most engineered floor joists hold a lot a lot of weight. Without a plan you aren't going to know which way your floor joists run unless you can see them from level below or you have a row of screw pops. If you have a row of screw pop you don't want to put it there cause already the deflection is way too much on that joist you'll end up with a bunch more pops and cracks. Put it in the basement and problem solved.

What aquaman is saying is your joist are like this

l l l
l l l

so set your tank up like this

l l l
l l l
---------

---------

It will disperse the load better helps if you are running on joists that run their full span lengths. I will also help if there is a ton of other crap on that joist area to prevent the ceilings and walls below from getting drywall cracks but I have a 40 on my floor and haven't seen a single screw pop. Not too much to stress about
