Hello everyone, I am about to take the plunge and get my first flowerhorn.:D What should I be looking for? I saw some 1"ers and one had a lot of spangling but not many flowers, another had a really red chest with more flowers, the others were not as colorful but had the most flowers. The spangled one was sort of hiding at the top. Would any of these be worth wild? I'm not really concerned about the kok, don't really like them, just my opinion. The ones with them most flowers remind me of my old trimac, that's why I want one. BTW this was before the flowerhorn craze, so it was a real trimac. Thanks for the help. FYI it will be going into a 55 with a 3" sveni, 1" jd, 1" carpintis, 1" salvini, 1" gold saum. I do have a 240 for when they get a little bigger.

For me it has always been about three things with Flowerhorn: 1st: Price, 2nd: Its appearance, 3rd: How it responds to my presence. If the price is too high for what I can afford, and I try to negotiate the price down and I can't, then I can't get the fish. Appearance is the next factor for me because I really love flower horns that look like painted art work with lots of color and pearls. The last BIG IMPORTANT factor is how the flower horn responds to me. Flowerhorn's should be ultra responsive to you. They should act like an underwater dog. If a flower horn won't chase my finger on the from of the tank then I won't buy it.

Thanks CrazyCichlids, they are only about 1" so when I got down to their level they started hiding. Are the pearling or the flowers more desirable?

Get the most vibrant colorful fish of all of them.

+1 on both of them. when i look for fhs i will never choose the ones tht doesnt respond my hand or somewhat scared of it. and if i saw one i will not just buy it at tht time, i will go look for some more at other lfs and try to compare their prices between their quality, and by tht i can choose the best quality with the price. price really matters to me but it's up to you, if you like it and you can afford even if it's not a high quality fh, then just buy it. :)
and yeah, pick the ones tht gives the brightest colors but however at 1" they havent yet showed their true colors. so, bright colors at 1" should be a stunner in the making.
gives us some pics when u purchased them

I will post when I get them & thanks for the info. The reason that I'm looking into them, besides reminding me of my trimac is because with my discount I can get them free, they're regularly $15. I figured since I've never had one, last time that I got a hybrid (blood red parrot) the cheapest flowerhorn was about $500 for 1". I felt sorry for the brp because the could hardly eat because of the beak, but my mother wanted them. In didn't know if the flowerhorns were going to develop anything like this, so when the prices when down, I still didn't get one. I noticed that everyone wants the big kok , I'm going to go a different route and ask is there a way to keep it from growing so big?

wait. what? 500$ for 1" ?! goodness me. lol
yeahh, i like fhs tht have big kok. but most people dont like em. some fh have big koks because it is in their genes, and some have em because they are well fed with quality kok enhancer pellets with good tank maintenance. koks can shrunk when they are stress and bad water quality. so if u dont want them to have big koks, it's basically the other way around, by not feeding kok enhancer pellets. just some regular cichlid pellets will do. make sure to check out the ingredients of the pellets especially spirulina which colors them up. also give them some meaty food sometimes such as frozen shrimps, worms, nightcrawlers etc. they will probably will eat everything. lol most first-prized fh won because they have really big koks.

I would run to aquabid at that price! A one inch is no where nearly grown enough to decide if its going to be a stunner or a culling fry. I picked up a pretty expensive fh for 250 at around a 2 inch mark. Nice fins, colors, and great nice round hump. Pretty sure its going to be a huge kok but with proportion to its body so I dont mind!

Prices may include shipping

But make sure you stay away from chonburiman, I have heard horror stories about him shipping the wrong fish and ignoring you. Hes banned on many many places including here. He does have some nice fish though.

Thanks guys, this was when the fh first came out in California it was at a lfs in Long Beach. I think I'll just give it hot dogs and clean the tank every six months. LOL just kidding.
