Okay, I've posted about my friend with a betta that has beatiful colors and is pretty large. He's had it for about 6 months. The question I want to ask is that he changes the water every 4 days and adds fresh water with conditioner. Is the betta living because the frequent water changes doesn't let the ammonia build up? Like I said, the betta is thriving, The Doctor.

Yes, that's why the fish is not dead. Because he changes the water 100% every few days. Every day would be better, but it's common knowledge that bettas live in small pools of not-so-great water, it doesn't mean that they enjoy it, or are thriving just because they are alive through it.

its not just bettas only.
all fish require the frequent water changes.

personally, i change mine's water 50% daily

Bettas live 5 to 10 years in proper tanks. Keep any fish in a cup of ammonia and it will also die in two years or less.

I've found bettas to need the best water quality to get nice color/growth/spunk ( they are sassy and spunky when kept well!) They are more sensitive to poor water the most tropicals.. But they can breathe air so the O2 content can be trivial. Never heard of one liveing 10 yrs but 3-5 seems to be average. I've also had some issues w/ some inbred/poorly bred mutants =/

I keep a Male in a large bowl ( he was living the good life in my 20 planted until a few days ago) and have been doing 50% WC's daily since the move. Which ime has had the best results. Have had a few Bettas over the years live 3+ yrs w/ lots of 50% WCs.

Is he keeping it in the cup that it came in or is it a bowl? It definitely helps that the water is being changed often.
