Hello Everyone!

I'm Eric and a newbie to fish keeping. I came across your site while doing research on what fish I'd like to stock, probably because I tend to gravitate towards Green Terrors, EBJDs, and BPs :D

My wife bought me a 55g (my first fishtank) as an early Christmas gift, and after quite a bit of cleaning the tank and sanding down and repainting the stand, we've begun a fishless cycle that has been going strong for about 2 weeks. I'm still doing a lot of research as regards to what I want to keep, and have gravitated towards Green Terrors and EBJDs while my wife insists on at least one BP in the tank. I also really like the EBJDs, but am hesitant to put them in a new tank even after it is fully cycled seeing that they tend to be less hardy than the regular Jack Dempsey's, they also come with a lofty price tag for my first go around in the hobby, as I'm sure I'll be making some mistakes.

Anyway thought I would introduce myself. Your site seems to be full of information and I'm sure you'll be hearing more from me! :goldfish:

Welcome to MFK. This I'd definitely the place to be for a new fish keeper. Have you thought about maybe a couple convicts. They really can be entertaining and are really easy to keep. I started out with 3 convicts and 1 Jack Dempsey. Really entertaining.
Good luck and if you have any questions let me know.

your tank is not huge so you can not have tons of fish... If you could upgrade to a 75 gallon eventruly you could have 1 jack dempsey, 1 green terror, 2 blood parrots, and a birchir... a 55 is just too small for a lot of fish... if you could not upgrade to a 75 gallon maybe 1 jack dempsey, 1 green terror and 1 blood parrot...

Thanks for the welcomes!

Oscaroo -- I was thinking about 2 juvie Green Terrors my LFS has a decent reputation around here and sells them at about 1 1/2" and 2 juvie BPs also about 1 1/2 - 2", but I'd be moving the green terrors into a separate tank in July. I am making plans to build a custom stand for something around a 75 that I'd like to get at the petco 1$ a gallon sales that come around. If that would work that would be my plan, but if you guys think that the Green Terrors or BPs will grow too fast for that then I'll hold off on one or the other until my other tank gets established and set to go. I've also heard that BPs tend to need dithers because of their tendency to be shy so if that would create too high of a bioload for my 55 perhaps I'll wait on the Green Terrors until July.

I currently have two 75 gallon power filters (HOB) running on the 55 and have plans to replace one of the HOBs with a canister filter after the holidays.
