So I was pretty optimistic about my gar taking to pellets, since he was eyeing them hungrily when I put some in on Wednesday. Well yesterday I tossed some more in and he went for them. Now here's the problem...I feed mostly Hikari Cichlid Gold and Biogold mixed, and what I've got is medium pellets. Well, they're pretty little in relation to the gar and they're pretty awkward for him to grab. So I've got to get him his own larger pellets. Any suggestions? Is the cichlid stuff OK if I go larger, should I try for Massivore, what do you guys feed and what pellet size? I know I can get f/d krill which he'll probably take but I'm thinking a high-quality pellet would be better.

you can try FD krill as well as Hikari gold pellets and Arowana sticks. Also they love raw shrimp and smelt.

I'll see about the krill. I want to really get him established on some kind of prepared/freeze dried stuff before I start trying him on raw seafood. It was really sad seeing him try to grab the medium pellets though.

shirmp may entice him more with its odor and fill up his tummy as well. We have given ours smaller pellets and they scrounge aroud collecting them all. You learn hat they like by trying various foods. they should have a varied diet anyway.

good for you ctu
and yup dried shrimp or krill is also good for them and they will accept that too once they have accepted pellets
in my case it was the other way round
they first accepted dried shrimp and then moved them to pellets

honestly once you get them eating pellets they will eat or at least try to eat almost anything you offer. just pick a few different brands of pellets (i prefer omega one) or whatever you want to try. all of our gar and larger fish are on a shrimp and fresh fish staple diet w/ various pellets and dried foods mixed in.

Well if there's no fear of him backsliding and refusing pellets then I'll try a bunch of things. I didn't really expect him to go for the pellets straight away, I figured freeze dried krill or something would be his first dry food. Well I'll hit the LFS today and see what they've got, then maybe the grocery. Luckily I've got the convicts so whatever he doesn't grab they're willing to pick up.
