Just recently got a new Gar from Snookin...when I first got him, he was complete BLACK! I thought it might have been a longnose (as I have seen some almost full black longnoses on Bass Pro Shop here in Orlando), but after a while he started to lighten up. Good looking Florida, ill tell you!

The reason I got him was because my other gar kept swimming up and down the tank and kept re-hurting his nose. Thought having another gar would calm him down some.

His fins are bit torn up but I am assuming it should grow back in no time?

Here it is, see the first pic the difference? That was after he lighten up ALOT!

FYI...I definitely recommend Snookin for your gar purchase...very nice and easy to get in touch of.

nice looking fish. the fins should heal up in no time, just get him eating and keep tabs on the regeneration. may want to bump up the temperature to 80F or so if you haven't already...this will increase metabolism, increase appetite, and also help the healing process along. be sure to keep up with regular large water changes as this will also make a big difference. good luck!--

I have a question, what are the benefits of water change if Nitrates reading are still 0-5? I still do 40% every week, but I am wondering what are the benefits outside from the kit readings? I reckon it might be to reduce chances of diseases?

There are a lot of minerals in the water that need to be replenished, which is where water changes come in. There are a lot of things we can't measure for that can affect the health of the fish, so its better to do water changes even if your test kit reads everything fine.

exactly, last week 3 of my new(er) gars started swimming madly against the glass, tested the water, everything was in order. in the end gave up and did a wc, worked like a magic trick

Nice gar...

Hormones are also released during water changes.

Update: They seem to be hanging out together and my older gar seems much more comfortable. The older one is about 10" while the newer one is 7".

Some good news, within the hour of getting him, I dropped some feeders and he ate the biggest one. I took that as a good sign...starting today will train him to eat frozen tilapia/shrimp off stick like the other.

Just wondering, why does releasing hormones through water changes beneficial for the fish?
