i have a new florida gar that i've had for about 7 days. he's not eating. he's in a predatory community tank with several other fish. he's not being harassed or picked on by any other fish and fits in well with the rest of them. he's not stressed and seems very relaxed. i've offered him sinking shrimp pellets, floating pellets, freeze-dried krill, blood worms, beef hearts and even feeder goldfish. he's not eating anything. i noticed yesterday that he grabbed a floating pellet in hs mouth and chomped on it a few times and spat it out. i feel that he's wanting to eat but is not getting what he wants. the lfs that i purchased him from was feeding rosy reds and blood worms. my concern is that he might not survive if he does not eat soon. i've had finnicky fish before but never this bad. any suggestions?

i have many florida gars, most of them act this way of some odd reason. i get them home from the lfs/pet store. and i watch them eat in the tank there in. bring them home the next day they dont eat..ive had a few gars go 11 days without eat anything. then the 12 day he ate like a pig. so i wouldnt worry to much. if you have a sparte 55g+ you might want to think about putting him in there alone for a few weeks. best of luck!

thanks gar lover!

The LFS where I bought my Gar never saw him eat, he only ate at night.
When I introduced some swordtail to make him feel welcome my Oscar ate 3 of them and 2 survived.
My Gar didn't catch them and they stayed in the tank for some time.
Until my Oscar took one of them and spit him out unconsious.
Then my Gar attacked, the heroe...
But he came around real soon and now eats anything I offer.
If powerfeeding in a seperate tank is an option, I'd say go for it!
Good luck and post some pics please!

WOW! Tonite, my 7-inch florida gar took a silverside! he finally ate something . . . I'm making progress. I was so worried about him. Thanks for all of your advice, guys.
