shouldn't the substrate be sand instead of gravel?

They'll always do best on sand, worth the change since the OP also has Corydoras.

In my opinion it's also worth it because 'G' steindachneri are amazing diggers, when sifting sand they'll bury their entire mouth and face almost up to their eye underneath the substrate and absolutely shovel through it.

+1

My group of 6 Geo. red head Tapajos sand sift CONSTANTLY. Imho, Sand also keeps them occupied, calmer and the 'floor' of the tank is always clean.

I'm not a big fan of sand at all, but may give it a shot if i set them up something for just them and not in any of the other tanks we have.

Hey Japes, long time no see!

Agree completely about the sand, for me half the fun of keeping Geophagus is watching them dig and sift! They will eat and survive without it, but feeding fine sinking foods with sandy substrate that allows them to sift for food is much more natural.
