i have no idea why stores insist on labeling them as such.
Becuase that is what they come in as from the wholesaler, whom gets the name from the importer, whom gets the name from the exporter, whom gets the name from the guy on the river boat that transports the fish to the exporter, who got the name from the collector.
And collectors are generally natives to the area, and aren't up to date on the lastest hair splitting scientists do.
Having worked in a LFS for quite a while when I was younger, I can tell you two things. Every LFS is not going to have a specialist to ID each fish they get in, it would cost way too much to staff with a Geo specialists, a westie specialist, a malawi specialist, ect ect
And two, unnamed fish don't sell well. I remember getting in apistos as agassizi, but both I and the manager knew they weren't. Heck, they weren't even in the agassizi complex. We did sell a few labeled as agassizi before we switched it to just apisto sp. since we couldn't find a match. None sold. Finally the manager, needing the tank space, switched them back to agassizi and they sold out.
Now, I don't agree with the mislabeling mind you, but I can understand it. The manager of one of the LFS always picks my brain when he gets in
Satanoperca or Pike cichlids in to see if they are what they are labeled as.
