Just got a green terror and a jack dempsey both around 3”. Currently alone in a 55 QT with caves and hides. They instantly started lip locking and fighting, im assuming this is somewhat normal but at what point do I need to seperate? Any advice?

Yes normal fighting for tank boss hierarchy. Do you plan on putting them in a larger aquarium? Most of the times with two Cichlids similar in color or shape it will difficult to prevent fighting and harassing.
I would seperate if I notice one is physically stressed up in upper corner , ripped fins and hiding.

Yea they are going to a 125 with possibly an oscar, just debating on adding the juvenile oscar to this tank now or to wait

I personally would add the Oscar first. Going to tag a great member with experience of a Oscar and get his analysis.

Putting cichlids in a tank together will induce fighting. They will set up a hierarchy of whom is boss and whom is subordinate, simultaneously staking claim to territory.

If you can, make the 125 the hospital tank if all new fish. More bodies to spread agression and more territory to split up. If not keep the two new in the 55 and watch closely. Like mentioned keep an eye for tattered fins, hiding up in the corners, behind the intake pipes etc. Can make a separator from egg crate light diffuser from Home Depot.

Dithers are more to calm scared/nervous cichlids. I think you are more thinking of target fish. Get a couple male Convicts that can take the agression.

The 125 is still cycling so not an option just yet. The GT, JD and Oscar are all 2.5-3” and will only be in the 55 for 2-4 weeks at most. I figured have them all start out together at same size would help...no?

The real problem is the Oscar is from lower PH softer water than the other two.

Whats your source waters PH and hardness? If using city water in the USA you can find your water quality report online its the law they have to post it.

Keeping Oscar's in high PH hard water leads to Hole in the head disease. That's why I switched to Centrals, my city water is liquid rock.
