I got a new GT on Saturday, and I'm startiong to get a bit concerned about him. I have tried a few different food types (tetra colour bits, generic crumble and a couple of others) and while he sucks in a bit here and there he spits the whole thing back out (the whole piece not into smaller edible pieces like a tetra or dwarf cichlid might) then ignore it. The GT seems happy, no stress indications (good colour, relaxed fins, happy to cruise the tank) total size is 3 maybe 3 1/2 inches. Any suggestions please. I dont really want to get into the habit of only giving bloodworm etc. So its basically been 3 1/2 days without eating.

Have you skipped 1 whole complete day of no food? Even if he is sucking in a bit and then seeming to spit it back out doesn't mean he isn't not eating some. If he is showing interest like you say, he will eat when he gets to hungry.

from lunch yesturday till late this evening no food (so 30+ hours). Unless any better suggestions come along I figure i'll just keep perservering with the dry foods unless he starts looking poorer for it, then I guess it will be the meatier foods.

try starving him for a couple of days
its a good way to introduce new foods
well feed fish can live weeks without a proper feed
well so someone told me

When mine pull this, I have one who sometimes wont eat much if anything for days. Live food, feeders or crickets always snaps him out of it. Then he stuffs face

I've been having the same problem with a wild caught GT, all he will eat (that I can see) is worm shaped things, he'll eat blood worms, earth worms, mealworms.

I havent seen him eat anything else.

I quit feeding worms almost a week ago, he still looks healthy, and bosses around my other fish.

I've been feeding the tank regularly (has other fish) maybe today I wont feed the tank at all, and try again tomorrow.

Newly introduced fishes can take weeks before they feel comfortable enough or get used to new brand of foods to start feeding.

I do noticed from my personal experience, GTs have a higher tendency to get internal parasites. If it doesn't eat after a few weeks you can try treating it with Jungle's parasite clear.

Like Irishfan says, live food really helps as well.

Thanks for the help all, I was tring to steer clear of the live/frozen foods till he was eating normal foods. Parasites are something to consider as well. Thanks again all, will do some thinking
