hey everyone! im brand new here and new to owning aquariums as well! i finally got old enough and landed a decent enough job to afford my own house and finally own that aquarium my parents would never let me have, lol. my favorite hobby in the world is fishing, both salt and freshwater, but have always been fascinated by fish, so why not have them around all the time?
i came up on a really nice setup for dirt cheap from a co-worker of mine, it's an 80g tank with a via aqua 750 canister filter...all came as a package. im not sure what kind of fish he had in it before, but what he did have was a snail problem since he had live plants i guess? because after cleaning it out and washing all the old gravel, they popped up shortly after i set the thing up, but they dont really annoy me.
ive never been too fascinated with tiny fish that eat nothing but flake food and look pretty, i enjoy large carnivore type fish because they interest me, lol. i started off with an albino tiger and black tiger oscar, they were both about 2" in length when i bought them about 3 months ago and they've been growing fast. i also bought two plecos to go along with them, and they have been gaining size rapidly as well.
maybe it wasn't the best decision, but i stopped by my LFS last week and two fish they had there caught my eye and i just had to take them home...a baby peacock bass and a baby redtail catfish, lol. i know these two fish, especially the catfish, grow massive in size and i will have to upgrade at some point...so if everything goes according to plan ill be looking to pick up something in the 250+ gallon range sometime next year.
i dont know much about aquariums, but i feel im picking up on things at a decent pace. right now my biggest challenge is keeping all of them fed and happy since i pretty much have to feed them separately for the time being. ive been feeding the oscars pellets and wait till they get full, then dropping some bloodworms in for the peacock in hopes the oscars wont notice, then pretty much hand feeding the catfish shrimp and nightcrawlers on the bottom, while giving the plecos algae wafers, lol.
anyways, im here to learn and any advice is much appreciated
