NEW GUY LIKES TO FIGHT!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
he's just trying to establish a territory and dominancy....i'm suprised you haven't noticed this before...it's kinda what cichlids in general do....so leave him in unless all your other habitants start losing body parts or getting all their scales eated off or something

otherwise, leave him in.

i never seen these guys go mouth to mouth before and the blue guy is losing his scales i think..

totally normal...only be concerned if he starts breathing heavy and sits on the bottom, and is really beat up.
or if any of your others are because of him....

ok he is laying on the bottom under a rocky area and hes missing a lot of scales the tank is some what calm though now he's not breathing heavy and once in awhile one of the others chases him out and he goes back in

Like others have said, he is trying to establish the alpha male status. I have one too thats very aggressive, he's killed a very large venestus, fontosa and a red zebra. If there's one lesson I learned is that you need to distort his line of sight. This is typically done by overstocking, but you can do it by adding more artificial plants or rocks in the tank to make it harder for them to chase each other. Best of luck.

Looks like a male blue dolphin cichlid (C. Moori). Look at my albums to see some pics of 10 inch males.

Blue dolphins are usually pretty mellow, but can go head on to any fight. (My 10 inch males are afraid of my 5 inch red zebra male, lol). You can add caves for the other fish, but my dolphins usually only stay in large open areas (I've never seen them go into a pot or rock cave).

I do agree with Cleanbio, if you want to cut down on aggression, you can distort their line of sight. I do this in my tank by adding large fake plants that you can buy at Fabric stores (these plants are usually silk and go between 12 inches to 18 inches). (You can see the fake Bamboo leaves in my avatar)

Good luck with your dolphin, they're really cool fish. Try to get a few more, they will start to school! :headbang2

Yeah thats a blue dolphin. We have 4 of them and they sorta hang out together, not sure if schooling is the right word with mine. Ours are only about 4 - 5 inches after two years, very slow growers fer sure.

One thing is they can dish it out. We have them inna mixed african tank and they give as good as they take. Definately not thin skinned.
