Hello Im not new to keeping fish but I'm new to setting up brand new tanks. The problem is I set up a new 30 gallon tank and my two young JDs seem to be very happy but I noticed there seems to be a lot waste in the gravel is this normal for new tanks is the waste just not breaking down yet?

How often do u change water and gravel vac and what filtration system r u using?

Sent from my Nexus S 4G using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

There is just a bunch of junk in the gravel not sure what all it is. I've just got a aquaclear 50 hanging on the back.
Oh and its only been up a week so this was the first time I went poking around in there

Hello; It is very common for new fish keeper to over feed at first. The fish may actually eat most, if not all, of the food. The extra food will either generate more fish feces or accumulate in the tank if not eaten. It took a long time for me to find a good balance with feeding.
If you do feed too much the extra stuff will have to be dealt with.
I like to have snails and live plants in tanks. The snails will eat any extra food and the portion of fish feces that may have some food value left.
The plants will take up some of the end results of the waste cycle as they grow. Even so the excess material will need to be removed somehow.
As suggested, this is usually done during water changes with some sort of siphon. It is my understanding that the python type can use running tap water to create a siphon and will send extra water down the drain when used this way. I use lengths of clear plastic tubing or a manual gravel vaccum which operates on gravity.

get a gravel vac siphon and try doing a water change

x2 particularly with young fish. syphonig solids out is part of regular maintenence. the only thing i can think of is in the past you had plecos or catfish that will eat extra food bits and waste if their nutritional needs wherent being met. i would also test your water perameters if your new to setting up tanks, ammoni and nititre spikes are par for the course the first few weeks.
