Hey guys Been keeping fw for awhile and now going to try my first sw just purchased a 56 column so was wondering where i should go from here thinking reef would be nice, and was wanting some good tips for starting. do you guys recommend the filter/skimmers in one or are the crap?

Welcome to the wonderful world of salt. Filters and skimmers in one are crap. A good and well priced skimmer is the Corallife Super Skimmer line. Reefs don't tipacly require any more filtration than a good skimmer, live rock, and sometimes carbon. On my 29 gallon reef I have a crapy hang on back skimmer (although a Euro-reef is in the mail), 40 pounds of live rock, and an intank canister filter for my carbon.
What ever you decide to do, lots of research is vital.

With a column tank, you are going to be limited on what you can get and light is going to be difficult.
