I just found MFK today and am very impressed with it's content and the amount of user/member activity. I've been into aquaria most of my life and after a recent hiatus I'm getting back in. My new beginning is with a couple red belly pacus, two tiger barbs, south american cichlids and a fish that I hadn't seen until my last trip to the lfs, a so called 'Dinosaur Eel'. I bought it on impulse and then when I got home did the research (oops, cart before the horse there!). But everything is working ot fine. I found that what I actually have is a variety of Bichir. I am really enjoying him and as he's only about 5" long he's not yet causing any predatory problems.

Anyway, i'm intending a full scale return to aquaria and some of my fish will definitely be monsters.

looking forward to seeing lots more good information and posts here at MFK.

Welcome to MFK.

good to have you on this site! I guarantee that if you take the hobby seriously, you won't be disappointed. I can guarantee you have a senegal bichir (the dinosaur eel), and if you got SA cichlids at an lfs, they are probably either firemouths, convicts, jack dempseys, or oscars. Post pics, we love to see them.

Just one thing, how big is your tank? This will be important, especially with the red belly pacus. They will need a tank when grown of at least 300g.

the cichlids are indeed a firemouth and a jack. Cliche' perhaps, but I've always liked them. At present all are housed in a 30 Gal tank but all are juveniles. The pacus are about 3 and 4 inches, they are my largest fish as the 5 inch long Birchir is very thin of course. I do realize the need for a larger tank as my fish grow. I'm actually doing a little research right now on building my own tank to fit our particular budget and space requirements.

good to hear you are building a tank. Although i hope you will finish soon. Nobody like to hear this, but you will need a bigger tank in 2 months, max. My suggestion is to return the pacus. They will cause you a big headache very soon
