hey im new to site but not to fishkeeping but looking to start around a 400 gallon wood aquairum in my basement and i had a few questions to ask. probably not keeping monster sized fish just shell dwellers and maybe something else to fill the top of the water column. but im looking intothe filtration and im wondering what are the better routes to take there. also any recommendations as for the other fish to put in i'd prefer to stay with fish natuarally found in the same area but i am open to suggestions. and is it possible to keep costs under 1k

welcome, shell dwellers? those tiny things?
your gonna need alot of those to fill a 400 gallon. but to each his own.
good filtration would probably be pond filtration
drsfosterandsmith.com has a good selection

Wow, are you planning on housing hundreds of those little guys? I'd like pics of that! As for filtration, I second pond filters etc.

I say forget the pond filters and build a large DIY wet/dry. Cant go wrong with that.

as far as stocking goes I think you will be disappointed when your done and have a Monster tank full of 20 gallon tank fish.

agreed. pond filters wont be up to it mechanically, id go sumthin like a 180gallon sump

That would work also, but it depends on how you're planning on installing it. Would it be on a stand? Would it be on the floor?

either way you can have a wet/dry. Just have to set it up right for the situation ;)

im doing a monster number instead of a monster size lol umm i think im looking at building on a stand i like the wetsump approach is it better to put the outputs and returns in the middle or attempt somethingon the bottom and hey dont rag on the shellies they are mighty for their size and very intersting to watch

:welcome: and keep us posted on the progress
