Hello everyone,

I'm starting to pull all the necessary supplies together for my first predator tank.

I've bounced around this hobby from Saltwater Reef and FOWLR tanks to planted and brackish but in preparation for moving out of my parents house into a new apartment I've sold off everything except an empty 90 gallon.

The 90 will be set up in 2 weeks running a new FX6. Decoration will be those semi 3d stick-on stone background tiles, a large piece of driftwood (hopefully a nice rootbase) and a handful of medium size riverstones.

Stock- This is where I need help. Anyone willing to chip in suggestions for a large aggressive CA/SA cichlid to keep?

I'm looking for something with real personality and hopefully something unique/rare. I will also be saving my pennies for a used 180/220 in a years time.

Favorites so far are Cichlasoma Festae, or a colorful Trimac

An Oscar 12"-13"
A Midas (red devil) 10' -12"
A female Festae could probably live for life in a 90 gal.
A female Jaguar same as above.
If you are upgrading to a 180 you could keep a pair with a divider handy of the Jag or Festae.

With the 90 you could keep a 12" wet pet for life (no tank mates) but the 180 opens up a lot more to choose from.

Good luck.

I'll be upgrading to a 180 when I have the funds so if I want to keep only a single wet pet, how large could I go? Also, being a Marylander, do you buy your fish local or online? LFS's have become slim pickings here.

What would be a reasonable life-time home for a male Trimac? Also have you found a reputable SA/CA cichlid sellers over there in Virginia? I'm trying to avoid shipping as I've never purchased fish online before. Thanks for your responses guys.

My solo M trimac was good in a 90.you could also try oscar, pearsei, chocolate, many kinds of vieja/para. Shipping for small fish is no problem, for the most part it is safe and you can find fish that are not available locally

female jag, oscar, or you can do a mated pair of JD. Jag are aggressive by nature, you want something to attack anything you put in the tank including the vacuum tube Jag fill that bill, but, tank is to small for a male. Oscar are not real aggressive but by far have the most personality, he will love to see you. is a drama queen and loves to rearrange his tank. JD a cross between the 2 but with out a mate they will not come to full color and attitude.

Well there is slim pickings in the fish dept. here in NOVA. But you do have Vienna aquarium in Leesburg. Centerville Aquarium in Centerville. As for the species I listed above there are a few breeders that I know of. But LFS don't have the aforementioned fish unless they are trade ins. I currently have trimacs growing out and I know some one that has a spawning pair if your interested pm me. If you go with an online vendor I recommend

TUIC tangledupincichlids.com and
COA cichlidsoftheamericas.com haven't dealt with anyone else so I can't speak good or bad about them. These guys get you your fish and they have very high quality stock.
