Hey everyone first post here this site looks great everyone seems to be so friendly and knowledgeable about all the aquatic fields:). Anyway over the last few months i have slowly been buying all the equipment needed for a successful reef. The tank is a standard 55 with 3-4 inch deep sand bed. For lighting i have http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewitem.aspx?idproduct=AK01191&child=AK01192&utm_source=mdcsegooglebase2&utm_medium=cse&utm_campaign=mdcsegooglebase2&utm_content=AK01192 and for current i have 2 maxi jet 1200 pro's i also have a http://www.marinedepot.com/AquaC_Remora_Pro_Hang_On_Protein_Skimmer_w_Drain_Fitting_+_Mag_Drive_3_Pump_Hang_On_Spray_Injection_Protein_Skimmers-AquaC-AC3123-FIPSHOSI-ACRPDB-vi.html for my protein skimmer.
Now for the fun part i made some awesome looking diy rock with rock salt white portland cement and crushed ouster shells. After i mixed 1 part cement 2 parts rock salt and 3 parts ouster shells i made molds out of wet sand and let dry over night then put the semi hardened rocks into 5 gallon buckets filled with water. i changed the water everyday to make sure all the lime and other bad stuff would leach out. my ph is 8.2 and my salinity is 1.023. My question is what type of rock would blend into mine best mainly to seed it with bacteria and Caroline maybe some fiji? Anyway i'm running on now so ill end this with some pic's of the rock.

just ordered 20 pounds of Premium Fiji UN-Cured Live Rock, 2 pounds of Rock Pool Bottom Crude and 2 pounds of Aquacultured Live Sand from premium aquatics should be here Friday.:)

Welcome! The DIY rock looks great and the Fiji rock should get you going well. I would cure it outside of the tank however or it will make a mess. One other recomendation is to make sure the DIY rock is seated on the bottom of the tank, not supported by the sand, so that it does not shift and collapse. Looking good, cant wait to see updates!

My order just arrived from over night shipping i shook the rock in a five gallon bucket with tank water then placed everything in nad re arranged the rock will post pics when the tank clears up. Also the tank has had salt water in it for about 2 weeks now but there wasn't any biomass to start the cycle properly.

Nice tank, if you want you can check out local fish stores that specialty in marine fish. Usually they have nice completely cured rock and where I go to is $6 a pound not that bad for cured...and i mean cured completly purple.

Also any plans on stocking? Looks like it would be a nice reef tank

Rock work is a little dense for my tastes, but still looks good. You need to get some life in there!

The fiji rock was manly just to add some diversity to the tank and to start the cycle i do plan on taking some of the diy rock out and putting some fully cued rock in though. My thoughts are that after a year or so Caroline should be all over the diy rock so it will look much better:).
As for stocking im thinking about putting some pulsating xenia's torch coral and maybe some polyps just to start off adding random ones i think will look good in the tank as i go along. I don't want to go to crazy on fish because i want this to be a reef tank so im thinking of putting 2 maroons and a 6 line wrasse.
