Hey guys well I "donated" my freshwater fish to my lfs. This was all of the beginning steps of finally a saltwater tankk. My tank is a 72 bow front and ran with a fluval 405 filter. Well this is what is in my tank:

Fluval fx5 MONSTER
Marine Glo Bulbs
Few live rock
Live Sand
Rena Smart Heater
Protein Skimmer.....problems

The water in the tank is at 1.024
Also I'm very confused about the protein skimemr. I heard it's great for the tank, but confuse on what it does, nothing seems to be filling in that top cup...

Help Please

First. Is your skimmer plugged in? :D

Just kidding, what kind of skimmer is it? There is a big difference between the cheap ones and the good ones. Skimmers are deffinitely "you get what you pay for". In addition to that, it will take a new skimmer (esp a low budget one) a couple weeks to "break in", and start actually skimming.

It looks to me like you probably do not have enough dissolved solids in your water to really see it work yet.

Let your tank cycle for a bit and see if it starts working. I would guess after you start adding life it will start foaming up real nice.

And as FLESHY said, make sure it's plugged in ;)

usually for salt ppl use sumps
but im sure an fx5 would be perfect and more than enough

What will you stock?

you could do a snowflake and fu manchu

Big fish = big filtration. Especially when you cant have cleaner crews bc of the fish you stock. I had a predatory reef, and not only did I have problems with cyano, but also aptasia bc I couldnt get cleaners in with my spotted grouper and volitan.
