I have two Green Spotted Puffers in a 20 Gallon freshwater tank one puffer is about an 1in long and the other is almost 1.5 inches. I am updating my 55gal to a 210gal and would like to move these guys to the 55gal. I am looking for some ideas of what kind of water to put them in when i move them, should i keep it fresh then slowly move it up? I plan on keeping these guys in the 55 for awhile. Some research that I have done said that the older they get the more salinaty they like. I would like to get them out of the freshwater...any suggestions. I love these little guys and can't wait to see what they will be like when they get bigger.

You can move them up to brackish water, very slowly, only raise the salinity by .002 a week. This way you don't kill off your bacteria. At a minimum they need to be in high brackish conditions.

OR

You can turn that 55 into a marine tank now (if you have got the money for it). Then just acclimate the puffers from fresh to marine over a couple of hours.

The age of the puffer doesn't really matter in this regard, juvies will do fine in full marine.

Congratulations on the new puffers!

Thanks they are a joy to watch. I can tell they get bored in the small tank. If I do change the 55 into a marine tank I have a canister filter that will do either, besides the salt what else might I need. A marine tank will be new to me but i have always wanted one.

Yes, they will get very bored in a small tank and they will fight over territories, which in a 20 there is not a lot to fight over. They will appreciate a more complex environment, and a bigger tank can handle the bio load (very messy eaters and poopers). But, be forewarned my 2 gsps out grew their 55 and went to a 75.

Ya they are messy and the Pacu I am moving to the 210 will outgrow it in a few years so the puffers may get a nice home when they do outgrow it especially if I do go full marine.

They will both get fat and 6" long. They are not to be under estimated. You will spend a ton of $$$ on a brackish 55 gallon. You still need to do 50% water changes weekly on a a high end brackish and replenish the salt. The most cost effective solution would be to go full marine and add a ton of live rock (the most important filter is LR) and only do 30% WC monthly. Thats $$$ saved (6 cups+ of salt WEEKLY). Its an expensive start and a cheap up-keep, where BW is the cheap start but expensive up keep. GSPs are coral eaters/killers so experiment wisely. Any other questions on equipment? Ask away.

And I misplaced some data, to clarify that is 6 cups of salt weekly on a brackish water System for a GSP NOT marine. Hence, its expensiveness

You really can't generalize about the amount if salt it'll take. Use a hydrometer or better yet, refractometer to measure the SG.

I don't suggest using a canister for SW--it's a Nitrate Factory.

It took 10 cups for 50% weekly WC on my 55g high-BW tank.
