...sort of. I switched the sand from white to black, and in the process I took his cave away.

I agree. Hopefully he doesn't return to his old spot, now that its back in the tank.
 
Does it stress catfish to take away there hiding places?
 
Not if they find a new one.

probably...he didn't stay out in the open for long though. There are several PVC pipes in the tank as well as the piece of driftwood.
