Hi , i just rehomed my Hoplias Mala cause the jag was way bigger than him. So i have few questions about hoplias behavior since it's my first one. What are their growth rate , how often they move from one place to another (mine stands steal for long time) , how to find out if it is a male or a female. Do they like turbulance waters or they prefer less?

Growth rate is 1in per month till about 12-14in then slows down. They sit for long periods of time and that’s it normal behavior. Females have larger and rounded bellies while supposedly males can have longer dorsals but other than that it’s hard to tell. Prefer no flow in regard to mala.

Came back from work and it ate 4 danios. Yday it ate 2 guppies. Is that normal? Even if it changes 2 aquariums it hunts like crazy. He ripped also his tail (which ll be ok i guess). How about the ick problem? Whats the most common problem for hoplias? I am sorry for the next question but... what is the best live feeders for small hoplisas? I m starting with feeders for the first week and then i ll try some shrimps

Eating other fish like this isn’t surprising. They are pretty resiliant and can heal from scrapes and cuts with clean water. They are at risk like other fish but not prone to anything specific. I’d skip the feeders and try some pellets or cut up frozen fish (thawed). Risk of infection with live feeders. It’ll take a pellet w/o too much fuss.

I think my hoplias doesnt like the clean bottom. It keeps see his image on the glass and banging the bottom side of the tank. Shouldn i add some gravel ? Well i ve tried with hikari pellets. It grab the so fast and then split em in a second. I think it ll accept them sooner or later.
