The new house I am going to move into has a water softener system, is this ok for my fish. I have a 90 and 180 gal. tanks with mostly South Amarican Cichlids and catfish. The water I am useing now is city water that is really hard and they are doing fine. Will I have to find a way to bypass the system or can I convert them some how. thanks for your help.

Tough question: I believe it may have to do with initial water quality, your equipment and the final water quality. I use the well water that goes through treatment. It would be easy to use water bi-passing the system. In any case I would suggest adding a whole house water filter just after the pressure tank and change the filter every month. (if their is not one already) You can then tap in there, between the filter and the water softener. Also an RO unit would be a great plus.
You may need to do a very slow drip acclamation to their new water. South American fish lean more towards soft rather than hard water. This could be good.
I am in Farmington Hills, where in Michigan are you moving to?
