Hey all,

I just moved from Minneapolis, MN to Mounds View, MN. The water at my new house is harder and has more alkalinity than previously used. Will this be a problem for my CA cichlids? I currently have convicts, thorichthys maculipinnis, and thorichthys meeki.

Also, if I put a water softener in the house (happening on saturday), is it bad to put that type of water into an aquarium? I've always had city water with no softener...

The harder water will be BETTER for Central American cichlids. Almost all CA's come from hard/alkaline to extremely hard/alkaline waters.

This.

It may take a bit for them to adjust - depending on what kind of water they were in.

Did some research. My water has a total hardness of 17 grains per gallon. A chart I saw said anything above 10.7 grains per gallon is VERY HARD. I already arranged buying a GE Water Softener...$488 at Home Depot.

Water softener might overdo things? One way to deal with this is to use sulfuric acid, but that's not advised if you're not comfortable handing chemicals. It lowers the pH, and removes calcium/magnesium ions from solution.
