was just browsing at one of my lfs wen i noticed a little hujeta gar,it was only 15$ and never have i seen a gar in my lfs so i had no choice but to buy it :) . Is about 4 inches long and i have it in my 50 gallon for now with 2 bichirs 2 clown loaches and a yoyo. the lady at my lfs had no clue what they wer feeding it so i bought a couple rosy reds and threw in some blood worms which he didnt eat yet. this is my first gar and online it said they dont get past 12 inches in captivity which is perfect, any input from seasoned gar keepers would be much appreciated!

I really like these guys. At one point I had a nice school of some chunky individuals who I raised from small guys. Unfortunately one of my brycons reeked havoc on the shoal and that was the end of them. My guys smashed rosies but got to the point that they were eating chunks of raw shrimp and frozen krill. Once I got them on that diet their growth picked up versus strictly eating feeders. You will enjoy this guy!

Are thes guys usually kept in shoals? there was only one at the lfs but i definantly would have gotten more. Cant wait to watch him eat

I usually only saw one sold at a time but a couple years ago an importer one of my lfs uses got in a big order of similar sized fish at a good price. I bought all five that my lfs had and they responded well to growing up together. Established a pecking order and then just hung out at the surface waiting to snatch up what ever was dropped in.

I had a group of 5. They are pretty fun to watch eat minnow! I had mine on blood worms and pellets too. They were about 9" when I sold them.

I inherited one from my sister when she took down her tank. I put him with my (rather nasty) African tiger fish and the two are still friends - even after I've moved them into my small predator community tank. Everyone avoids the ATF, except my little hujeta. He wasn't hard to break off live either. He chases down bits of shrimp and tilapia like a champ.

Great little monsters that are relatively underrated on this site in general. Enjoy!

Mine always tried to hang and school with similarly shaped and colored fish. The Brycon I had was not having it though and he just wailed on them mercilessly until the pack was moved. They even liked to hang with a rather obnoxious african pike who was a bully to everything but the hujetas for some reason. I can def see them trying to buddy up with a tiger fish. Luckily for him the ATF is playing nice with him for now.

just read they are not a true gar but a freshwater barracuda some call it? anyway i really like the guy, first time owning a fish like this

I had 2 that grew to beefy 8" guys before I sold them. I regret not gettin more cuz they had a bunch at the time cuz they do love to hang out together. I started mine off on bloodworms then didn't feed them for a few days and they took floating carnisticks instantly. They also loved swimming against the current from the output from the pump
