So I have a 30 gallon tank and its been set up for some time. I used to have a pair of convicts but they got big and I decided to take them back and just switch it up. I want to switch to some africans. I was wondering how many I could put in a 30 gallon cause I would eventually like to see them breed. How hard is it to breed them? How many should I have if they breed? I do have another tank to raise fry if they do breed.

a 30 gallon is rather small for most africans. you may want to look into getting some shellies though

You could do a species only tank of Mbuna. For optimal conditions you'd probably only want to put about 4 in there. One male and 2-3 females. Plenty of hiding spots and frequent water changes should yield a lot of breeding. Aggression would probably be hard to control in such a small tank though so I'd stick with the less aggressive Mbuna like yellow labs, acei's, or rusty's.

Or like the poster above me said, shellies would work in a tank that size for sure.

also, if you haven't set up the tank yet, i would get pool filter sand for the substrate. africans love to dig and its pretty cool to watch them sift sand and as they dig, spit out mouthfuls of sand to dig territories
