Hi! my name is Ronnie, Im a 15 years old guy that love cichlids and other fishes!
Excuse me if I dont write very well, because I come from Dominican Republic, a Paradise on the Caribbean, I speak Spanish and English and I have to make my English better. Well, As i said before, I love Cichlids, I have 2 Oscar fish, I will get 2 more tomorrow, And I want to learn about more Cichlids than Oscars, I have a tank of 200 liters(50 gallons) Conected by tubes and Pumps to a 100 liters(25 gallons) I want to get 4 Parachromis friedrichstalii, How many liters I need to can keep them well and happy?

See you! Thanks!

WELCOME TO MFK!! freddies are great fish as are oscars but freddies stay a much more manageable size, what are the dimensions of your 50g? unfortunately i dont think that it will be large enough for even one oscar once its full grown, these fish get to 14in+ so get longer than a normal 50g tank is wide, the freddies should only get about 10in however, but if you get four you will probably end up with a pair and then they will quickly kill the other two so i would rehome the other two once a pair is formed, i think to comfortable house a freddie pair you would need at least a 75g tank though even then you may need a tank that is longer if they are too agggressive with each other, cichlids are great fish with huge personalities but because of this they need lots of space or they will feel crowded and turn on their tankmates, again WELCOME TO MFK, your room will be filled with tanks in no time haha

Thanks for the welcome! Well! I know that Oscars will get bigger! Im thinking to get a bigger aquarium! But later, when they grow more! a 110 Gallons will fit 1 Pair of Oscars and the Parachromis, It is ok? Or I will need a bigger aquarium?

I think that Cichlids are one of the most inteligent fish, because, My oscars learn when I will feed them, and they didnt desesperate.

Thanks again!

See you!

Congrats and Welcome!! Your English is understandable and legible and thats all that matters in the fish keeping world!! :headbang2

As for the Oscars, Sarah88 is correct in that they will get way too large to fit in your 50 gal. They are probably one of the fastest growing cichlids around....as well as the messiest. If you plan to maintain the water parameters and constantly give them fresh/clean water, you should be able to keep 2 juvies for a while in there until you get yourself a 100gal + tank for them and possible tankmates.

Again welcome and enjoy the forum!

Thanks for welcome! I dont think that my english is good but if you understand is awesome.

Well! I make 2 changes per week of fresh water! My filtration system is a Sump of 80 liters, that I converted to a filter! I have all my parameters at the line! 0 ammonia ever! My oscar have never get sick, I care them very well, but with 2 more It can change a little bit, so, I will separate them with a glass until I see if they get aggresive, they just have between 1 o 2 inches, so, They can be there for 8 months no? I have MUCH question! Thanks for answer!

See you!

ok yeah sounds like your taking great care of them but they will definitely need an upgrade earlier than 8months, oscars kept in good water and fed well can easily grow 1in per month so that would make them 9-10in in 8mnths and definitely too big for them all to be in the 50g tank, you should be ok for maybe 4months, but by then you should really have a larger tank, for 2 oscars and 1 freddie i would say a 125 would be good but if its a breeding pair they may beat on the freddie, and if you want to have a pair of each then i think you will need more like a 180g, just so that they have enough space and dont kill each other when they start to breed, so in a 180g the 2 pairs and some kind of dither fish should be comfortable and not have too much aggression

Much agreed on this post. Oscars need A LOT of room to really thrive and be at their best.

BTW, welcome to MFK!

Hi Sarah! Well, The freddies will come after I make the tank, It could be ok in a 150 g with much driftwood and rocks? It more accesible to me because im just 15 years old, I work but I need to buy more thing and the aquarium size could enter in my room but I dont want to make the other aquariums go out.

Thanks for Welcome again! I feel really happy!

See you!

Sorry for my bad English! :(

haha its fine, 1 oscar min of 75 gallons then 25 gallons per oscar ( or so i think its that way ) i have 2 oscars in my 110 but have some smaller cichlids to, and no deaths yet!
