I got a new 5" jack dempsy today probably going in his own tank unless anyone has suggestions for tank mates at his current size

I would agree with the Oscar I believe If you buy an Oscar now at around 6" he would stay steadily much larger than the jd so that should work and from my experience an Oscar will stand up against almost any fish including jds and a large Oscar will not take a jack dempseys crap lol. But I would get a 6"-8" Oscar for now and he should stand his ground

Correct I forgot to mention the tank size requirements as a single Oscar needs a 75 gallon and a jack Dempsey needs a 55 but those are both on the small side. You can do a 125 gallon (easier to find than 100s in my experience) with a jack Dempsey and an Oscar and maybe an 8"-14" catfish like a pictus or an upside down cat or even an eclipse cat. But look into those catfish because you will need a large tank with this fish setup you will have. Or you can do like 4 bristlenose plecos in a tank that size for algae control. But like I said you will need a Large tank for a pair of fish these sizes. Or you can sex the jack and get him or her a partner but stick to similar size fish such as if you have a 5" fish don't get a 12" fish keep in the same general size regions and good luck! :) if you decide to go with a pair make sure they are alone as they will kill many other large fish like an Oscar in some cases just be careful lol never underestimate a large cichlid
