Hey everyone, I just picked up a itty bitty baby Jaguar cichlid today. It's maybe and inch long. I've done a bunch of research on these guys but there are a few things I'm having trouble finding.

The one thing I can't seem to find is how fast these guys grow. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Also, any good ideas on what to feed it? I got it to eat a few bloodworms but I'm going to offer flake and maybe small pellets tomorrow.

It's going into a growout tank. It it better to do daily 20% water changes, or one big 60 or 70% water change weekly?

its better to do smaller changes more frequently. but 50% once a week is fine if the tank inst overstocked or anything. i wouldnt recommend changing more than 50% at a time though, especially if its a small tank (75 and under). as for growth im not positive, but i would guess around 3/4" a month up to around 6-7" and then slow down a little.

i have a 4 inch one right now and he has probably grown at about an inch a month and i am feeding him floating pellets and he snags the occasional shrimp pellets from the catfish...its an awesome fish with alot of personality and has starting growing and eating alot more recently

what has already been said is correct. i personally do a 50% water change a week and that has always seemed to work well. feed him hikari gold mini pellets as they are small enough to gulp down a few at a time. keep feeding it bloodworms and also try brine shrimp. all my CA/SA's love it

i have two jags male an female i got them last year in may an the male is now 10" an the female is about 6" i grew them in a 80g with a red bay snook and a Red pike an they are still tank buddys today. they can be very mean as well the male being the biggest like to let everyone know hes the biggest also males tend to get bigger faster. all in all its a good investment and for food i fed mine bloodworms an flakes when they where small they never really liked pellets any live food is best to get them big fast.

i agree with everything else that has been said but just so your jags dont become fussy eaters keep up a varied diet, bloodworms, mealworms, brineshrimp, pellets, chicken (mine loved it) and feeders.
just keep mixing it up and you shouldnt have probs down the track

I have mine with a green terror (about 50% larger) convict and bumblebee. For about a month my GT ran the tank even when it came to my 7" common pleco. Just recently my jag is getting the guts to come to the surface and get a full cichlids pellet and the gt has been for a while and he can't swallow them he sucks on it til it's soft enough but my jag that's plenty smaller pushes gt out of the way and plows a large pellet and won't let it go. However I don't see any major growth on the jag I feed nightcrawlers, frozen bloodworms, cichlid gold, omega pellets, dry krill and I refuse any store bought feeders but will start breeding cherry shrimp and nightcrawlers (which due to the ingridiants of omega consisting of nearly only fish read and compare top 6 ingridiants in omega and anything else you will be amazed) (all my cichlids are roughly the same size and there are no conflicts)

mine shot from 3/4 inch to this in 6 months. He/she is around 8 inches now.:headbang2

Started with bloodworms till it was big enough to switch to the hikari gold pellets. It's always fun growing them out. :headbang2

Thanks all! K626, that Jag is beautiful!

Just a quick update. He's now 2" and a little terror. He gets flake, bloodworms, glassworms, mysis shrimp, and whatever krill and ghost shrimp he can snag from his tankmates.

My only problem with him is the fact that he is really picky. He used to scarf down Hikari pellets, but now he turns up his nose at them. I wonder why?
