Hey guys i just got a new jag today. He is about 2 inches and in with my 5 inch pbass and ornate bichir. I also have a 2 inch flowerhorn in another tank. Do u guys think it will work out? Also wat type of substrate best brings out the colors of fish. Right now there is no substrate. thanks in advance for the replies.

as far as will it work what size tank do you have? As far as substrate a darker substrate is better for cichlids. A lighter substrate will sometimes bleech out their color unless you have a black background. As far as any certain substrate IMO its all personal prefrence. I personally like gravel but some perfer sand and some perfer no substrate at all.

They can live together depending on the tank size. I have black sand and it gave my cichlids a darker tone to them.

I have seen this combo of fish work especially at that small size, as long as they have some room they should be ok. I find that darker colors help bring out the fish. I usally prefer sand in a natural color or black ,

thanks for the replies guys. I put the jag with the flowerhorn cuz the pbass kept chasing it around and i could tell the jag was tired. I was surprised tho cuz the jag held its ground a couple of times against the pbass which is like twice as big. Brave little guy. They would just display and chase but no actual fighting. The flowerhorn and jag are getting along pretty well better then i thought. a few chases once in a while and thats it. And as for the substrate im going to get black gravel because last time i used sand it got caught up in the power filter and kinda messed it up so again thanks for the replies...very helpful. :)
