New Jaguar Cichlid shy?

I got a jaguar cichlid about a week or two ago and he eats but only when im not around... my parameters are fine and what not but does it just take time for them to adjust?

Yes it will take time. If small it sees you as a predator especially a small Jag. Most would add dither fish like Tetra or live bearer to help it feel more secure.

Also add some floating plants and lots of cover to make it more secure.
Seems like the bigger, meaner, and more predatory the fish is, the more skittish it is.

no its not alone. i know its not advised but i have other south american cichlids with it. And hes is about 8 inches currently

someone on here said it was a hybrid jag but im not totally sure what do yall think?

Just give more time to get comfortable with you approaching aquarium.
