Hey guys I decided to do what I have been dreaming about. So I drove about 40 minutes away from my house to pick up this lil boy/girl. I think the correct name for him is Volitan Lionfish (Venomous). I m really excited, I have him in a 29g for now and I m currently setting up a 55g so he could stay for at least a year. I made sure to check the water today and the nitrate and natrate are perfect, the ph is about 8.2 to 8.4 (8.4 being ideal) the only thing that concerns me is that the alkalinity of the water is very high. should I worrie about that? anyways any comments suggestions are highly appreciated.

ok so I m done setting up the 55, I should let it run for a few days before relocating him I think. I want to place him with a flame angle about his size but dont know if thats a great idea.

not in the future it won't be! the flame will grow much slower than the lion and they (lions) have very, VERY big mouths!
he'll probably need more than a 55 when fully grown (about 11 inches) but not more volume just a shallower wider tank. just advise.
if you use a coarser grain of substrate the alkalinity should be buffered better.

I almost died once from the venom on these guys... not fun stuff

are you serious? I thought you couldnt died, that the worse it could happen would be serious pain/swalloning hands.
:screwy: I guess I better be extra careful then:screwy:

anaphylactic shock.

I had one for a few years ina 75, Great HARDY fish once established. I would not be in a hurry to move him again thats too much stress to fast.

I got mine to eat raw fish/shrimp instead of live prey by movies the dead food items around with one of those hard 1/4" airline tubing.

I got stung once and only once on the wrist, the sting was quite painful but that wasnt the bad part. I ended up getting an infection in my lymph nodes under my armpit from it and it was HORRIBLE.

Just be careful and enjoy your new pet!!
