Picked up an awesome little brown ghost knifefish (Apteronotus leptorhynchus). He's a cute little guy and only about 4" long. Supposedly, they're not particularly rare, but it's been at least 5 or 6 years since I last saw one at a LFS.
At the LFS I noticed the little guy darting around some PVC pipes in a big display tank full of big fish. I went to speak to the store owner and a somewhat amusing conversation ensued:
Me: "hey, how much is the little knifefish in the big tank at the front?"
LFS owner: "In the big tank? Uh, $35"
Me: "$35?! for that little knifefish?"
LFS owner: "Wait, are you talking about the clown knife?"
Me: "No, the little ghost knife"
LFS: "What ghost knife?"
Me: "The one in the big tank"
LFS owner: "There's a ghost knife in the big tank?"
Me: "Yeah. I just saw him a minute ago"
I take him over and find the knifefish for him
LFS owner: "Huh. I figured that thing had been eaten. He must have been in there for at least 2 or 3 months. You can have him for $5"
Me: "Sold!"
As he was bagging him up, the LFS owner's wife came up and declared: "Ha! I told you that little guy was still in there!"
