near but far
About a week ago got a couple of 1" zebras but till this day I have yet see them come out and eat. Previous owner said they were taking dainichi n new spectrum but, as I feed them I find a lot of the food not eaten. Of course I vac it up and did a WC. My question since I have never had these plecos before is that is this normal for them to take this long to get acclimated and comfortable with their new surroundings? I am getting worried that their not eating and that the uneaten food will cause ammonia spikes. any help would be great!

When I got my group of 10 mine were eating spectrum and repashy but to make sure I got them eating I used brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Then once I seen them physically seen them eat that's when I started mixing up their food with spectrum and repashy and bloodworms with the 2 other types of shrimp. Getting them to eat in the first week is a good thing to make happen. The first couple days they will probably not going to eat let alone come out of hiding. Good luck

Tell me about it! These guys hide under the caves I bought them rather than staying in them. Don't really know if they are eating since I still do see remaining food on the sand. Do they prefer a specific temp in your case? My tank is about 81~82

I would put 1 solitary rock or anything they would have to huddle together under. Put your hand and arm in the water and drop the food right next to them. At this size, they don't like to wander much. Feed at night when all the lights are off in your house. I bought 6 1inch zebs a few months ago and they all live under 1 rock in the same little space. I feed mine earthworm sticks and aglae wafers and there always gone in the morn. Don't overfeed, they don't need much at that size to fill up.

Thx for the reply. I really don't feed much like 15 pellets of the baby new spectrum. Sounds like a good idea but really don't want to disturb them and since I got like 4-5 caves for them. But again that sounds like a good idea maybe I'll wait another day or so and if they don't come around I'll try it out.

Btw I keep my zebra tank at 80 degrees do a weekly water change and have a uv sterilizer running on mine with 2 big sponge filters along with 5 caves and a chunk of driftwood(for looks) with a sand bottom and they seem to do just fine
